Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull colored. It has a great deal of gloss and shine because of the excessive secretion of coetaneous fat. Often a chronically oily skin has coarse pores and pimples and other embarrassing blemishes. It is prone to blackheads. In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed. The oil oozes and gives the skin a greasy shine. The pores are enlarged and the skin has a coarse look.
Causes of Oily Skin:
· Heredity
· Diet
· Hormone levels
· Pregnancy
· Birth control pills
· Cosmetics you use
· Humidity and hot weather
Take a skin test, to determine your skin type.
Normal skin has an even tone, soft, a smooth texture, no visible pores or blemishes, and no greasy patches or flaky areas. At the touch normal skin feels velvety. This type of skin has a clear, fine-textured, supple and smooth surface which is neither greasy nor dry. It glows with an inner health which stems from good blood circulation and excellent health. It is the least susceptible to external environmental influences.
Acne is, however, not a problem for people with normal skin.
Each person’s skin is unique and is a natural combination of three factors:
1. Water content, which is responsible for the skin’s suppleness and comfort.
2. Lipid content, which is responsible for nutrition and softness.
3. Level of sensitivity, which is responsible for the skin’s resistance to and tolerance of environmental factors.
Normal skin has an adequate amount of water and lipids and a moderate sensitivity level. There is no such thing as "perfect" skin in teenagers or adults. Normal skin is beautiful, but it needs daily care if it is to last. Neglect can lead to signs of aging and wrinkling. Take a skin test to determine your skin type.
Dry skin is a very common skin problem and is often worse during the winter when environmental humidity is low (commonly called, "winter itch"). It can occur at all ages and in people with or without other skin problems.
What does dry skin look like? Everyone is familiar with the appearance of dry skin. The normally fine lines in the skin become more visible, the skin feels rough and appears matt, dull and flaky. In more severe cases, fish net-like cracks can occur (look like tiny cracks on the upper layer of the skin). Pores are usually small, and because the skin does not provide enough skin oil, it peels or flakes off. The skin color becomes rough, and when the external effect of cold and wind appears, skin become blemished. Take a skin test to determine your skin type.
What causes dry skin? Dry skin results when there is not enough water in the stratum corneum (This is the layer that peels off after a sunburn) for it to function properly. One way this can happen is when protective oils in the stratum corneum are lost and the water that is normally present in the skin is allowed to escape. Too much soapy water, exposure to harsh chemicals, the normal aging process and certain types of skin diseases are some of the causes of decreased amounts of protective skin oils. As the stratum corneum dries out it shrinks and, as it shrinks, small cracks can occur. Resulting… in what we call, dry skin.
Treatment of dry skin
An important part of treatment is to identify and correct any and all situations that may be contributing to the dry skin. It is natural to think that applying water alone to dry skin would help control the problem. It does not. However, water followed by the application of oil such as a Moisturizer is of great benefit for dry skin. The oil in the moisturizer helps trap and seal water in the stratum corneum and make the skin softer, smoother and less likely to become dry, cracked and itchy.
After washing your face with a Cleanser, quickly and gently pat the skin partially dry with a towel (do not rub!). Within three minutes apply a moisturizer. Cream / moisturizer, can be directly rubbed into the skin after cleansing the skin.
If there’s a way for you to increase the humidity (moisture) level in the air of your home and workplaces, that would be advisable. If not already present, you should consider adding a humidifier to the central heating system of your home. If you use a portable humidifier, make sure it is used in your bedroom at night. Suggestion… if you have dry heat in your home and no humidifier, place a bowl of tap water on top of or near your heater, this should help replenish some of the moisture in the air.
Use of skin Moisturizers (emollients) for long term controls and prevents dry skin.
Dry skin is usually a long-term problem that recurs often, especially in winter. When you notice your skin beginning to get dry, resume your moisturizing routine and avoid the use of harsh soaps.
The skin acts as a protective layer covering the whole body, and provides a balance between internal and external environments. In order to properly choose and use products for skin care, you need to know what type of skin you have.
Most women don't know exactly what type of skin they have. Determining your skin type is not as easy as it seems. The constant uses of various cleansing agents, toners, moisturizers and decorative cosmetics have some major effects on your skin and may create a false impression.
The type of skin have often varies with age, sun exposure and the improper use of daily moisturizers, but with the right hygienic care you can keep your skin in good condition permanently. Each skin type has its own characteristics and requires special cosmetic agents for the care.
Acne prone type of skin can be recognized by gloss and shine, especially around the nose and forehead area, because of the excessive secretions of coetaneous fat in those areas. Acne type of skin is known oily type, it tends to be prone to inflammations, comedogenic rashes (allergies, usually due to a type of product used on the face) and acne.
Oily-acne skin has large pores, and skin may appear loose and even flabby. It can be easily stretched. Skin color is usually homogeneous with acne, and if under the influence of cold or hot temperature, skin can react in a negative way with an appearance of brown or discolored skin patches.
Using a cotton swab soaked in tonic, wipe the surface of your face and neck using light movements, trying not to stretch the skin around the fine facial lines. Avoid eye area. After cleansing and purification of acne skin, apply a moisturizing agent. Silk cream or lotion.
An Anti-Oxidant Toner completes the process of purification, by removing remnants of dirt, and revitalizing acne skin, but most importantly it normalizes the acid-base pH balance.
There are three main steps in the daily, acne skin care:
